Western Knights coach Trim Morgan says his side should be buzzing for the Westfield FFA Cup after their 1-0 upset victory over Sorrento in the State Cup Final at Perth Plasterboard Centre Stadium today.
A goal from Adriano Jelenovic in the 69th minute secured the win for the underdogs, with an overwhelming reaction from their supporters.
Morgan said his team had an outstanding performance. “It was absolutely sensational,” he said. “We had lots of possession in the first half and a few half-chances.
“In the second half we had a cracking goal, and then we didn’t really have to hold out but we defended well.”
Morgan praised the work of Jelenovic and Stan Lazaridis medal winner, Ben Coulter. “Benny’s been great all season and we know Adriano can finish,” he said.
“He did the business against the last two PS4 NPLWA sides, and what a finish 30 odd yards out today.”
Morgan said the win will give his side the momentum they need ahead of the Westfield FFA Cup.
“We’ve got a game next weekend and we need to beat Forrestfield to maintain our place at the top of the (All Flags State League Division One) table, and then obviously we look towards the FFA Cup,” he said.
“The boys should be full of confidence. It was a really good performance today.”
Sorrento coach Jamie Harnwell was disappointed in his side’s performance.
“We were obviously in it for a long period of time but the Knights took a great goal,” he said.
“We had a couple of half-chances and we didn’t take ours, so it could’ve gone either way but full credit to them. They worked very hard for it.”
Harnwell said his side will now look to pick themselves up and prepare for their Westfield FFA Cup match against Canberra Olympic this week.
“It’s a bit of the kick up the backside, it would’ve been nice going in with a bit of momentum,” he said.
“But now I’ve asked the players to remember how it feels and to use that as motivation now going into the FFA Cup.”
